Think of a colouring book, but made of fabric and big enough to cover your lap on the sofa. The usual size is close to 150 x 125 cm, and the pens are often included.
There is no set order: one flower tonight, a corner of the pattern tomorrow. It is wide enough for two or three people to work on it at the same time.
Themes range from flowers and fruit to cats and more fantastical scenes. Large areas fill quickly; small detailed zones take longer but look striking when finished.
What makes the difference is the washable ink. With water-based washable pens, manufacturers state that the colour comes out in a normal machine wash, so the same design can be coloured again. Check the care label before the first wash.
Some people switch to permanent pens for a finished blanket they want to keep as it is. Just keep track of which areas were done in which ink.
A few practical tips help. Colour on a flat surface so the fabric does not stretch, and close the pens after each session so they do not dry out. A quick test on an edge shows how strong each colour looks.
For adults it is a calm, screen-free way to unwind in the evening, much like a mindful colouring book. And once coloured, it is still a cosy throw for the sofa.
